An accurate measurement is the result of a measurement process that is controlled from start to finish.

The Fundamentals of Reliable Measurement

To effectively feed data into an APC system, the measurement data must be consistent over time and, as much as possible, independent of control conditions or the operator.

Several factors are essential:

Maintenance and periodic inspection of the CMM.

Qualification of sensors, styluses, and probing systems.

Selecting accessories based on the part's geometry, material, and tolerances.

The thermal stability of the part, the machine, and its environment.

Control of vibrations, cleanliness, and potential pollutants, such as dust or oil mist.

A mounting method that is repeatable, robust, and minimizes mechanical stress on the part.

A careful review of the drawing, its references, and its dimensional and geometric tolerances.

A measurement strategy and a validated program tailored to the functional purpose of the part.

The goal is not simply to record a value. It is to ensure that the measured value truly reflects the condition of the part and can be relied upon to guide a quality decision or process action.

The Environment: A Key Factor

It is therefore necessary to take the following into account:

The actual room temperature and its stabilization time.

Temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

Temperature gradients between different points in the workshop.

The Impact of the Production Environment on the Machine.

Vibrations, cleanliness, and environmental conditions.

Temperature compensation is a valuable tool, but it is no substitute for proper control of measurement conditions.

Installation and Measurement Strategy

A part that is not properly secured, positioned using non-repeatable supports, or subjected to stress during clamping may exhibit artificial deviations. These deviations may then be interpreted as production drift by the APC system.

The installation must therefore ensure:

A reference system that complies with the functional references defined on the plan.

Stable and repeatable support.

Holds the part in place without causing deformation.

Sufficient access to the areas to be measured.

Simple and safe operation for the operator.

The same requirement applies to the measurement program. A coherent strategy must incorporate the choice of probe, the number of data points or scanning paths, the filters used, the alignments, and the method for evaluating tolerances.

Visit ZEISS DuraMax HTG is a three-dimensional measuring machine designed to perform inspections as close as possible to the production line.

With a measurement volume of 500 × 500 × 500 mm, it is suitable for a wide range of workshop inspection applications. It can operate within a temperature range of 15 to 40 °C, provided that the thermal conditions and gradients specified by ZEISS are met. It does not require compressed air, which facilitates its integration into industrial environments.

The DuraMax HTG is equipped with a touch sensor ZEISS VAST XXT TL3. Depending on the strategy chosen, it is possible to perform point-to-point measurements or scanning measurements. Scanning allows for the capture of more information about contours, profiles, and surfaces in order to better characterize the part’s actual geometry.

As part of a process control strategy, a 3D metrology solution such as the DuraMax HTG can help provide fast, structured, and actionable inspection data for analyzing production trends.

Automate to Secure Data

Automation doesn't necessarily start with the integration of a robot.

A basic level of automation can be based on repeatable part placement on a pallet, part identification, guided program initiation, and a simplified operator interface. This approach already helps reduce manual handling, ensure the safety of measurement cycles, and minimize operator-related variability.

When production volumes and throughput rates warrant it, automation can evolve toward robotic loading solutions and greater integration of metrology into the production flow.

Conclusion

A robust APC starts with reliable measurement.

It makes it possible to identify deviations earlier, distinguish between actual variations and measurement-related effects, and make faster, more relevant, and more reliable decisions.

Dans un environnement industriel de plus en plus piloté par la donnée, la qualité des décisions dépend directement de la fiabilité des mesures disponibles.
